Pope John Paul II Track & Field School Records (2018-Present)

Pope John Paul II High School started a new track and field program in 2018.

We have a very young program with official seasons in 2018, 2019, and 2022. There was no official outdoor season in 2020 due to COVID issues. In 2021 there was a league season for about six weeks. However, the district and state meets were canceled because of Continuing COVID concerns.

Here is a brief history of each Track and Field season to date:

2018

The Track & Field team did incredibly well in their first-ever track and field season. The team qualified many people to state and had several state placers. The boy's team made the state podium, placing fourth in their first-ever state track and field championship meet. The boys brought home the first state trophy in athletic school history.

The state placers in the first meet on the boy's side included Caden Deutscher (1600, 3200) and Kobe Deutscher (800, 1600), Jack Farrell (800, 1600), and Dmitry Sutton (3200). Jack (800, 1600) and Caden (3200) placed second in their specialties at the state championships.

Of particular note, 2018 was Jack Farrell's first and only track and field season of his life. Jack became the first athlete in a JPII sport to receive an athletic scholarship to a University after his outstanding track and field season. Jack currently runs for Saint Martin's University. This fall, Jack was the number one runner on his cross-country team (2021).

Molly Zepeda and Holley Nichols reached the podium on the girl's side in their first state track meet. Molly placed in the 100-meter hurdles, and Holley placed in the 1600 meters. These two were the first ladies to put in individual events at a state championship athletic event for JPII.

2019

In just their second year, the boy's team placed second in the Washington State Championships

Kobe Deutscher (800, 1600), Caden Deutscher (3200), and Tim Sellars (shot put) all won individual state championships to become the first athletes in school history to win state titles in any sport. Brothers Caden and Kobe Deutscher became the first brother's in-state classification history to go 1-2 in the 1600 and 3200-meter events.

The girl's team placed 5th at the state championships in their second year with a team. Maggie Larson (800 meters), Clare Kondrat (1600 meters, 3200 meters), and Molly Zepeda (100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, triple jump, long jump) all made the state podium in their events. The 4x400 meter relay team of  Morine Kimani, Isabella Pettis, Holley Nichols, and Maggie Larson made the podium.

2020

There was no season in 2020. However, Tim Sellars threw in a virtual state competition, breaking the school record in the shot put. Tim also threw farther than the existing state record in the shot put during the 2020 virtual season by a large margin.

2021

The JPII boys and girls teams won the Sea-Tac League Track & Field Championships. Both the boy's and girls' teams were heavy favorites to win the state championships because they led the state in numerous individual events. However, the district and state meets were canceled due to COVID concerns. Still, in their state classification, Kobe Deutscher, Joshua Braun, and Clare Kondrat were named Washington State Track and Field athletes of the year.

JPII was blessed to win three out of four statewide track and field athletes of the year awards in 2021.

2022

The JPII Girls team won the Washington State Track and Field Championship in 2022! It was the first state championship in the short history of school track and field. The boy's team placed third at the State Championships! Trevor Dugo led the Eagles by winning the 1600 and 3200 meters at state and finishing second in the 800 meters. Vivi Kondrat won the 3200 meters, placed second in the 1600 meters, and 4th in the 800 meters to lead the lady Eagles.

I am still compiling the number of individual podium places in track and field for historical purposes. However, this post serves as a start to keep our history alive.

The track and field program is still very new. I will do my best to update this document as long as I am a coach at JPII.

Pandemic Years Of 2020 And 2021

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the great heart of the track and field teams during the pandemic. Although the team had a great attitude during the pandemic and took things in stride, much was lost.

I don’t want to marginalize what these excellent teams accomplished. They continued to train and never gave up on their goals. No doubt, several individual and state team championships were potentially lost in 2020 and 2021.

Both Eagle's track & field teams were one of the favorites to win state titles in 2020 and 2021 in track and field, but the state meet was canceled. JPII Track and Field athletes led the state in their events more than any other team in 2021.

I bring these accomplishments up to recognize our student-athletes fantastic work, even knowing a state meet would not happen.

The Pandemic teams showed heart, determination, and grit, absolutely knowing there would be no final exam for them to show how hard they worked.

I will never forget the 2020 and 2021 teams. These were some of the greatest teams I’ve ever coached, maybe the greatest of all, because of their incredible character in the most significant societal challenge in generations.

The JPII Pandemic teams never gave up. They became role models for us adults about how to handle adversity.

State Shot Put Champion Tim Sellars

Tim's shot put throw in 2020 is the furthest throw in his classification in Washington State History. Unfortunately, there was no state championship in 2020, so it is not the official record. It is still the longest throw ever by a 1B athlete which is the smallest athletic classification in Washington.
