"Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?'" — John 11:25–26

COMING THIS FALL

The Most Important Project of My Life — and Why the World Needs It Now

Let me tell you something I have been sitting with for nine years.

There are more than a billion people alive today who describe themselves as agnostic, atheist, or simply — honestly — unsure. Many of them are not hostile to faith. They are waiting for a serious answer to a serious question. They have never been given one.

Not a devotional. Not a personal testimony. Not a bumper sticker.

A real answer. Built on history, science, mathematics, and evidence that would stand up in any courtroom, any laboratory, any university seminar room in the world.

I have spent nine years building that answer. And I believe it is the most important work of my life.

It is called The Eternal Case: History, Science, and the Soul's Evidence for Jesus Christ.

It is coming this fall. And because of the importance of what it contains, I am seeking a traditional publisher to bring it to the people who need it most.

Why This Book Is Different from Anything Else Available

There is no shortage of Christian apologetics books. C.S. Lewis wrote Mere Christianity — perhaps the greatest apologetics work of the 20th century. Peter Kreeft, the Boston College philosopher, has written over 80 books defending the faith. Lee Strobel's The Case for Christ has sold millions of copies.

I have read sections and summaries of all of them. I am grateful for every one of them.

But The Eternal Case does something none of them does.

It is the first apologetics book built simultaneously on six independent lines of evidence — history, archaeology, the resurrection, science, consciousness research, and philosophy — all converging on the same conclusion, written specifically for the 21st-century skeptic who has access to Google, who knows what a peer-reviewed study is, and who will not be satisfied with anything less than the full case.

It incorporates evidence that simply did not exist when Lewis wrote in the 1950s or Strobel wrote in the 1990s — peer-reviewed near-death experience research published in The Lancet and major medical journals, the cosmological fine-tuning data confirmed by physicists including Nobel laureates, the complete manuscript evidence now catalogued at over 5,800 Greek New Testament texts.

This is not a better version of what already exists. It is the first of its kind — and the category it occupies is one no other book has claimed: the comprehensive, multi-disciplinary, 21st-century cumulative case for Jesus Christ written for the honest skeptic.

Who This Book Is For

This is not an ambush. This book is not written for people who already believe.

It is written for the agnostic who has spent years sitting with the question and has never been handed a serious answer. For the atheist who respects evidence and is willing to follow it honestly. For the scientist, the physician, the psychologist, the data-driven professional who deserves rigor — not sentiment. For the person who loves someone who does not believe and has run out of ways to reach them. For my friends in science, technology, mathematics, and academia — and for every honest agnostic and atheist who has ever asked: is there any real evidence?

Someone close to me — brilliant, fair-minded, trained in the highest standards of scientific evidence — became one of the reasons I kept going on this project. If The Eternal Case cannot satisfy a mind like that, it is not finished yet.

That standard has shaped every word.

Everyone decides for themselves. All I ask is that you decide based on the actual evidence.

What You Will Find Here

The Eternal Case presents twenty chapters across six lines of evidence. Here are the chapter summaries:

📌 Introduction — The Author and the Question: Nine years. One question. A commitment to follow the evidence wherever it leads — including places I did not expect.

📌 Chapter 1 — The Most Documented Ancient Text in History: As of 2024, over 5,800 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament exist, totaling more than 2.6 million pages — forty times more than Homer's Iliad, which no scholar questions. The earliest fragment (P52) dates to approximately AD 125, within a generation of the original writing. Paul's creed in 1 Corinthians 15, recording eyewitness testimony of the resurrection, has been dated by scholars — including the skeptic Bart Ehrman — to within three to five years of the crucifixion itself. That is living memory, not legend — and the textual foundation is stronger than any other document in the ancient world.

📌 Chapter 2 — What the Ground Confirms: The Pontius Pilate inscription (1961), the Caiaphas ossuary (1990), the Pool of Bethesda with five porticoes as described in John 5:2, the Magdala synagogue (2009), and the heel bone of a crucified man (1968) — all confirm the biblical record precisely. Archaeologist Titus Kennedy, after an exhaustive review, reached this conclusion: not one archaeological discovery has ever contradicted a biblical claim. Not one. The Gospel world is not mythology. It is a world the ground keeps confirming.

📌 Chapter 3 — The Testimony of Enemies: Tacitus called Christianity a mischievous superstition — and still confirmed Jesus was executed under Pilate. Josephus, a Jewish historian, recorded the crucifixion and his followers' claims of resurrection. Pliny the Younger, a Roman governor, documented Christians who refused to recant even under torture. The Babylonian Talmud records that Jesus was hanged on Passover Eve. These are enemy witnesses — people with no theological motive to help the Christian case. When your opponents confirm your core facts, that is the most powerful testimony available.

📌 Chapter 4 — The Mathematics of Fulfilled Prophecy: Jesus fulfilled over 300 Old Testament messianic prophecies. Mathematician Peter Stoner calculated the probability of one man fulfilling just eight by chance at 1 in 10¹⁷ — illustrated by covering Texas two feet deep in silver dollars, marking one, and finding it blindfolded on the first reach. For 48 prophecies, the figure is 1 in 10¹⁵⁷. These calculations were reviewed and confirmed by the American Scientific Affiliation. No coincidence theory survives the mathematics.

📌 Chapter 5 — What Even Skeptical Historians Accept: Historian Gary Habermas spent decades cataloging facts about the resurrection accepted by the vast majority of scholars, including secular critics: Jesus was crucified, the tomb was found empty, multiple independent sources record post-mortem encounters, Paul — a violent persecutor — converted after a claimed resurrection appearance, and James — Jesus' own skeptical brother — died a martyr for the same claim. N.T. Wright spent 900 pages on rigorous historical analysis and concluded that the bodily resurrection is the single best historical explanation for all these facts taken together. No competing theory accounts for all of them simultaneously.

📌 Chapter 6 — The Witnesses Who Would Not Recant: Every major apostle was given repeated opportunities to save his life by simply denying what he claimed to have seen. Nearly all of them chose death instead. Sean McDowell's exhaustive research in The Fate of the Apostles documents this in rigorous historical detail. The basic principle of witness psychology is this: people die for beliefs they sincerely hold. They do not die willingly for claims they fabricated. The apostles' deaths are among the most powerful testimonies in history — not of faith in general, but of the specific claim that they had seen Jesus alive after his death.

📌 Chapter 7 — The Earliest Voices: Clement of Rome (AD 96), Ignatius of Antioch (AD 107, writing on his way to execution), and Polycarp of Smyrna (AD 110, a direct disciple of the Apostle John) all unanimously affirm the bodily resurrection of Jesus. These are not theologians writing centuries after the fact. They are eyewitness-linked voices writing within living memory, under conditions where any living witness could have exposed fabrication. Nobody did. The resurrection was not a belief that developed slowly over generations. It was the proclaimed center of Christianity from the very beginning.

📌 Chapter 8 — The Universe Had a Beginning: The Big Bang establishes that the universe had a beginning — it did not always exist. Whatever begins to exist has a cause outside itself. The cause of the universe must therefore be non-physical, outside of time, immensely powerful, and capable of intentional action. These are the precise attributes of the God of classical theism. Sir Roger Penrose — Oxford physicist and not a theist — calculated the probability of the universe's ordered initial state arising by chance at 1 in 10^(10¹²³) — a number larger than all subatomic particles in the observable universe. The physical constants of the universe are also fine-tuned to extraordinary precision for life to exist; change any of them by the smallest fraction and no stars, no chemistry, no life of any kind is possible. This chapter does not claim God is a physics calculation. It claims the evidence of physics deserves an honest worldview response.

📌 Chapter 9 — The Miracle of Earth: Of all the planets discovered in the universe, not one — not one — has been confirmed to support complex life. Earth sits in the narrow habitable zone of a G-type star that is stable, long-lived, and the right size. Our axial tilt of 23.5 degrees creates seasons and a large habitable region. Our magnetic field shields life from lethal solar radiation. Our Moon — unusually large for a planet our size — stabilizes our axial tilt and prevents catastrophic climate swings. Jupiter acts as a gravitational shield, absorbing or deflecting asteroids and comets that would otherwise sterilize Earth. Plate tectonics recycles carbon and regulates temperature across billions of years. Astrophysicist Dr. Hugh Ross has cataloged over 200 parameters that must all fall within narrow ranges for complex life to be possible; Guillermo Gonzalez and Jay Richards' The Privileged Planet identifies 12 broad factors all present simultaneously on Earth. The probability of this combination arising by chance has been estimated at 1 in 10⁴². This is not a long shot. It is a signature.

📌 Chapter 10 — The Fermi Paradox: The Great Silence: The universe contains an estimated 200 to 400 billion stars in our galaxy alone, and our galaxy is one of roughly two trillion galaxies. If life arises naturally wherever conditions allow, the universe should be teeming with it. Physicist Enrico Fermi asked the haunting question in 1950: "Where is everybody?" Despite more than sixty years of SETI searching, the answer is: silence. Zero confirmed extraterrestrial signals as of 2024. No megastructures. No artifacts. No contact. The Great Silence is itself a scientific datum. Peter Ward and Joe Brownlee's Rare Earth hypothesis argues that complex life requires a specific and rare set of conditions, suggesting that Earth may be genuinely singular in the observable universe. The Great Silence points toward the conclusion that life — especially intelligent, complex, conscious life — is not a random accident but something extraordinary that happened here, at this address, for a reason.

📌 Chapter 11 — The Origin of Life: Science's Unsolved Problem: Fred Hoyle — atheist astronomer — calculated the probability of life assembling itself by chance at 1 in 10^40,000 and concluded: "Life cannot have had a random beginning." He did not become a Christian. He proposed panspermia. But the math forced even him to abandon the view that life arose by chance on Earth. Here is what is not disputed: after decades of research, science has not produced a credible, testable, step-by-step naturalistic pathway from non-living chemistry to self-replicating, information-bearing life. Stephen Meyer's Signature in the Cell makes the most rigorous current case for why the information encoded in DNA points toward an intelligent source. The honest answer is: nobody knows how life started. The honest question is: what explanation fits the evidence?

📌 Chapter 12 — Extra Dimensions: String theory — the leading framework for unifying quantum mechanics and gravity — mathematically requires ten spatial dimensions. M-theory, its leading successor, requires eleven. Physicists Brian Greene, Lisa Randall, and Ed Witten have written extensively about this. Here is the question that should stop every materialist in their tracks: if mainstream physics not only allows but requires the existence of dimensions beyond our perception, then on what grounds is the existence of heaven, hell, or the spiritual realm inherently anti-scientific? This chapter does not prove the existence of heaven from string theory. It removes the assumption that heaven is obviously impossible — and it does so using the tools of physics itself.

📌 Chapter 13 — Near-Death Experience Research: In 2001, cardiologist Pim van Lommel published a landmark study in The Lancet: 344 cardiac arrest patients across ten Dutch hospitals, 18 percent reporting near-death experiences during verified flat EEG — clinical death. Some patients accurately described events in the room while unconscious, confirmed by medical staff. Blind patients reported visual perceptions they had no physical means to have. Sam Parnia's AWARE study (Resuscitation, 2014) produced similar results. Van Lommel's own conclusion: he has no answer within the materialist framework. He says so directly. This is not a ghost story. It is controlled clinical data in refereed journals that has not been explained away. If consciousness can exist and function while the brain is clinically non-functional, then the materialist objection that resurrection is impossible is not a scientific fact. It is an assumption — and the data challenge it.

📌 Chapter 14 — The Soul: The existence of the soul is not merely a religious claim. It is a philosophical question that some of the greatest minds in history — Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes — argued rigorously. The "mind-body problem" remains one of the most intractable problems in philosophy of science. Philosopher David Chalmers calls this the "hard problem of consciousness" and has argued that purely materialist explanations remain inadequate. Neuroscientist Wilder Penfield, after a lifetime of mapping the human brain, concluded: "The mind is independent of the brain." The Catholic and classical Christian tradition holds that the soul is real, that it survives death, and that this is not a leap of blind faith but a conclusion reached by reason illuminated by revelation.

📌 Chapter 15 — The Problem of Evil: This is the most powerful argument against theism, and this book will not minimize it. If God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-good, why does suffering exist? Philosopher Alvin Plantinga's Free Will Defense is the most rigorous philosophical response: genuine love requires genuine freedom; genuine freedom makes genuine evil possible; God's greatest gift and the source of the world's greatest suffering are the same thing. But this book goes further than philosophy. The Christian answer to suffering is not an argument. It is a Person — a God who entered the suffering, took it on himself, and was tortured to death on a cross. C.S. Lewis and Peter Kreeft have written the most compelling treatments of this question. The cross does not explain suffering away. It transforms its meaning. And the resurrection answers its final form: death itself.

📌 Chapter 16 — Evolution and Creation: The Church's actual position is not what the culture war has made it out to be. Pope John Paul II stated in 1996 that evolution is "more than a hypothesis." Pope Francis has reaffirmed this. Francis Collins, former director of the National Institutes of Health, has written compellingly about evolution as God's creative mechanism. Kenneth Miller, a Catholic biologist at Brown University, has argued that evolution is fully compatible with faith. The false war between evolution and Christianity is largely a modern cultural construction, not a theological one. The truly unanswered question — how the first self-replicating life arose from chemistry — is the one materialists cannot answer.

📌 Chapter 17 — Science and Religion: The False War: The "conflict thesis" — that science and religion are inherently at war — has been largely abandoned by historians of science. It was largely constructed in the nineteenth century by two writers, Draper and White, whose scholarship has been repeatedly challenged. The founders of modern science were, in remarkable numbers, devout Christians: Newton, Galileo, Mendel (who discovered genetics as an Augustinian friar), Pasteur, Faraday, Maxwell. Critically, Georges Lemaître — a Belgian Catholic priest — proposed the Big Bang theory. The Church initially resisted it because it sounded too much like creation ex nihilo. The science caught up with Genesis.

📌 Chapter 18 — Every Major Objection, Answered: The hiddenness of God. Religious pluralism. Religious violence and the Crusades. The Bible's difficult passages. Freud's claim that God is a psychological projection. The Euthyphro dilemma. These ideas are not dismissed. They are engaged with the seriousness they deserve, drawing on Aquinas, Plantinga, Lewis, Kreeft, Feser, and the best philosophical tradition. Honest inquiry requires honest engagement with the strongest objections. This chapter is that engagement.

📌 Chapter 19 — The Tapestry: No single chapter is the whole case. The case is the convergence — the most documented ancient text in history, archaeology that confirms and never contradicts, hostile non-Christian witnesses who confirm the core facts, probability mathematics that eliminate coincidence, minimal historical facts accepted by secular historians, witnesses who died rather than recant, the earliest voices all saying the same thing, a universe whose beginning and fine-tuning point to a cause, an Earth whose improbable perfection is unmatched in the known universe, a cosmos eerily silent where life should be common, an origin-of-life problem no naturalistic theory has solved, extra dimensions of reality accepted by mainstream physics, peer-reviewed evidence that consciousness survives clinical death, a philosophy of the soul that reason supports, and honest answers to every major objection. When independent lines of evidence this numerous converge from different directions on the same conclusion, that is what serious inquiry calls evidence.

📌 Chapter 20 — Do You Believe This? This is the question Jesus asked at the tomb of Lazarus, and it is the question this book ends with. Not "are you certain?" Not "can you prove it?" But: do you believe this? Faith is not the absence of evidence. It is the response to evidence — a step toward the light where the accumulated record of history, science, philosophy, and human experience has been pointing. The resurrection is not merely an interesting historical claim. It is the culminating truth of Christian faith — received not only as a fact about the past but as a living reality in the present. And the same God who fine-tuned a universe 13.8 billion years old, who raised a man from the dead in first-century Jerusalem, who transformed a persecutor into an apostle and a skeptic into a martyr — that God also knows your name.

The Credibility of the Sources

Every claim in this book rests on scholarship you can verify yourself.

The historical case draws on Tacitus (Annals, XV.44), Josephus (Antiquities 18.3), and Pliny (Epistulae X.96) — primary sources available in any university library. The resurrection case draws on Gary Habermas and N.T. Wright — scholars whose credentials are not in dispute even by those who reject their conclusions. The science draws on Roger Penrose, Pim van Lommel in The Lancet, and Peter Stoner — whose probability calculations were reviewed and confirmed by the American Scientific Affiliation. The philosophy draws on Alvin Plantinga, David Chalmers, and Peter Kreeft. I have read sections and summaries of all of these works — not every page of every volume — but enough to follow the arguments, check the claims, and trace them back to their sources.

I did not write this book to tell you what to believe. I wrote it to put the evidence on the table — completely, honestly, with every major objection addressed — and let you decide.

If the evidence does not hold up, say so. I welcome the challenge.

To Everyone Already Forming a Counterargument: Good.

I expect it. I welcome it. Some will challenge the probability numbers. Some will dispute the manuscript dates. Some will argue about which prophecies count. Here is my response: do your own research. Not the kind that stops at the first objection that confirms what you already believe — the kind that keeps going. Read Stoner, then read his critics, then read the critics of his critics. Read N.T. Wright's 900 pages. Read van Lommel in The Lancet, not a summary. Sit with the fine-tuning numbers long enough to feel their weight. Look at the preponderance of evidence — the whole tapestry, not one thread.

I am not asking you to accept my conclusions. I am asking you to follow the evidence wherever it leads, even if it leads to unexpected places.

Why I Am Seeking a Publisher

The people this book is written for do not browse Christian self-publishing sections. They are in university libraries. They are in bookstores. They are being handed books by colleagues who trust the imprint on the spine.

Being in my 60s, I am aware this is a bold goal. But I keep returning to a simple truth confirmed over and over — in Scripture, in history, and in life: God's timing is not our timing. The last chapters of a life are not the footnotes. Sometimes they are the whole point.

I do not know if this project will succeed. I only know I cannot leave it unfinished.

One Final Thing

I plan to give all proceeds from this book to organizations that serve the homeless and the forgotten — the people Jesus called "the least of these." He spent his ministry among the poor, the sick, the outcast, and the sinner. If this book is about following the evidence for who Jesus is, then this is my attempt to follow the evidence of what he did. I can think of no better way to honor him.

The Eternal Case: History, Science, and the Soul's Evidence for Jesus Christ is coming this fall. It is written for the honest skeptic, for the agnostic who has never been given a serious answer, for the atheist who is willing to follow evidence, and for the believer who wants to go deeper. Every major objection is addressed. Every major argument is documented. Nine years of research. Forty years of study. Twenty chapters. One question at the end.

Share this with the person in your life who is honest enough to search for the truth.

Blessings, Larry Weber Philippians 4:13
