Pope John Paul II High School Boys Win First-Ever Washington State Cross-Country Championship

Kevin Hu Claims Individual State Title; JPII Girls Finish as Top 1B Team and Third Overall in Combined 1B/2B Field

LACEY, WA — Pope John Paul II High School (JPII) in Lacey, Washington, celebrated a historic milestone as the boys’ cross-country team captured the 2025 Washington State High School Cross-Country Championship, marking the first boys’ state athletic title in school history. Junior Kevin Hu delivered a standout performance, securing the individual state championship—a first-ever individual state boy's title for the school.

The JPII girls’ cross-country team also excelled on the state stage, finishing as the top 1B program and achieving third overall in the combined 1B/2B classification, placing behind only two larger 2B teams. Their performance highlighted exceptional depth, teamwork, and competitive strength, reinforcing JPII’s status as a leading program in Washington high school distance running.

“Our teams ran with heart, discipline, and purpose,” said Head Coach Larry Weber. “The boys made history by claiming the state title, and Kevin’s individual championship was an extraordinary achievement. Our girls also delivered a powerful performance against strong competition. Above all, we give thanks to the Lord for unity, strength, and the opportunities we have been given. It is a great day to be an Eagle.”

Senior Amy Kondrat reflected on the season’s significance:
“In my four years, I’ve never experienced such a positive, faith-filled season. This team is something truly special, and I am so proud of every one of my teammates.”

State individual champion Kevin Hu added:
“This was an incredible blessing. I’m grateful to God, my coaches, and my teammates. None of this would have been possible without them. This season has been a gift.”Program Legacy of Excellence

Since 2018, the JPII boys’ cross-country program has earned:7 District Championships, 5 State Runner-Up Finishes, 1 Third-Place Finish, and their first State Championship in 2025.

During the same period, the JPII girls’ program has achieved 6 District Championships, 4 State Championships, 1 State Runner-Up Finish, and 3rd Place at State (2025)

Together, both programs have consistently ranked among the top cross-country teams statewide, exemplifying teamwork, perseverance, competitive excellence, and faith.
